THE BENEFITS OF GI EDUCATION

Serving in the military is a great way to show support for the country and commit yourself to something bigger than yourself. But, it is also a great way for practical and smart people to attend college without having to go into thousands of dollars of debt. There are two GI Bills that are currently being used by the government to help veterans of the military attend college without going into debt. The two bills are the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill.  Below are some benefits associated with each of the bills.

COLLEGE EDUCATION PAID FOR

The biggest and the most obvious benefit of using the GI Bills is the fact that most if not all of your post-secondary education is paid for.  As many people know, paying for college can be very difficult, if not downright impossible for those people that have low incomes and low savings.  Since the price of college has been increasing eight times faster than the rate of inflation in recent years, affording a college education has become a major hurdle for many middle class families.  Thankfully, the GI Bills allow members of the military and military veterans to get their education paid for without going into debt or having to work two jobs to pay the bills.

RECOGNITION FOR YOUR SERVICE

Another important factor in regards to the GI Bills is that it lets military members and veterans know that the public as well as the government is recognizing their service and their contributions to the safety of the nation as a whole.  The GI Bill is a representation of the gratitude and thanks that the entire country has towards the military members because of their immense sacrifice and grace in serving in the military.

CHOICES

The beauty of the GI Bills in general is that they allow military veterans to choose any college or university they want to attend.  The government does not simply have a list of colleges that can be used like some think. Instead the money from the GI Bill can be used at any school, which is why the GI education benefits are so beneficial.  The Post 9/11 GI Bill awards as much money as the most expensive four year public school in the home state of the recipient.

However, most people are aware that private schools are much more expensive that public state schools.  This is where the Yellow Ribbon Program comes into play.  When a private school participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, they are pledging to give the amount of money to the student that the GI Bill won’t cover.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill are both GI education benefits that were created to help military veterans re-adjust to civilian life and honor their service with an education that both improves their human capital and improves their outlook on life.  The benefits are immense and are used to attend college for free and improve the life of the veteran.
